The History of the Neti Pot

The neti pot has been becoming more in vogue lately. Before you decide to use it for your sinus related problems, you may want to know a bit about the history of the neti pot and how it is actually supposed to work. After all, you always want to know as much as possible when your health is involved.

The neti pot has been used in the Indian yogic tradition for no less than millennia. It is extremely old, which speaks well for its ability and effectiveness. It is also known as jala neti. It was not introduced into the United States until the 1970s. It emerged through the widely popular yoga culture. It was actually used as a device during meditation.

Even after yoga turned into a rather mainstream practice, alternative cultures continued to use the neti pot. For example, it is now a part of Ayurvedic medicine.

The neti pot is used in nasal irrigation, also known as nasal lavage. It is something used in personal hygiene, but it can also improve certain aspects of your health. Basically, your nasal cavity is essentially cleaned out. This will flush out any excessive debris and mucus from your nose as well as your sinuses. Almost anyone could benefit from a nasal irrigation system, they are powerful.

The pot itself has been described as looking like a hybrid of a gravy boat and a magic lamp from Arabian nights. Its design makes this flushing process easier. The pot is most often filled with warm saline, or salt water. Sodium bicarbonate is sometimes added.

The spout of the pot goes into one nostril. The liquid goes into it. Ideally, you would want the solution to either go through your nasal cavity and into the back of your throat. That allows you to spit it out. The other method is having it go into your other nostril and then stream out of it. Next follow the links below to learn more about the topic of sinus and nasal irrigation.

Average Blood Sugar Level

Average blood sugar level amounts are determined by a few factors. This article will list what those factors are and how to determine whether your body is operating with a normal blood glucose level and what you might expect for changes during the day.

Your blood glucose level usually starts out on the lower side in the morning and rises and falls during the day - primary due to your food intake. Food that is consumed that contains carbohydrates are converted to energy by the hormone insulin which is produced by the pancreas. As your body gets low on energy, blood sugar amounts in the bloodstream rise until insulin does its job. Once the the glucose is converted, blood glucose levels decrease to a more stable level. Within a few hours, however as the body needs more energy, the glucose levels are once again on the rise. Glucose levels stay at a higher level until once again another round of food and nutrients are consumed. Such is the cycle of someone with average blood sugar level amounts.

Problems occur, however when the body does not produce enough insulin to convert the glucose. As a result, the glucose stays in the bloodstream and can wreak havoc in the body if the condition of high glucose amounts persist. The average person who is not at risk for diabetes has a blood glucose level between 75 and 150 mg. This can also vary from person to person based on their weight and the amount of physical activity that he or she has in their life.

Travel Health - Leishmaniasis

There are dozens of countries in the old world and the new where you could get this disfiguring and potentially fatal disease. However in the past 2 decades most of the press has been on soldiers returning from the Middle East with this disease.

Leishmaniasis is not a single disease, but a group of syndromes due to a variety of species of this parasite. The affect different populations and are related to a characteristic vector, the sandfly.

The disease can range from asymptomatic infections to those causing significant illness and death. Disease can appear on a spectrum from a single skin ulcer to destructive lesions of the face to terminal organ disease.

Leishmaniasis is found in 88 countries worldwide and is broken down between Old World and New World.
Old World leishmaniasis is primarily found in parts of Asia, East and North Africa, Soouthern Europe and the Middle East.

New World leishmaniasis occurs from northern Mexico to northern Argentina, with rare cases reported in parts of Texas and Oklahoma. In South America it is not found in Chile or Uruguay.

Leishmaniasis in the US is typically indicative of immigration and travel.

The vector for this parasite is a phlebotomine sandfly. There are a few different species implicated depending on the part of the world.

Sandflies are very small (about 1/3 the size of a mosquito) and make no noise when flying. There bites can sometimes be painless; because of these reasons, many people have no idea they were bitten.

Even one bite of a sandfly can transmit disease, so travelers on short trips can still get infected.

When the female sandfly takes a blood meal it injects the parasite into the wound. Macrophages pick up the parasite and here they multiply until the cell bursts from overcrowding. The parasite goes on to infect more macrophages.

Some of these cells get carried to organs of the body incuding the liver, spleen and the bone marrow.

There are several species of Leishmania that cause disease in humans. The most common are Leishmania donovani (kala-azar), L. tropica (Baghdad boil), and L. braziliensis (espundia).

After getting bitten by a sandfly, disease may manifest itself from a week to many months later.

It starts out as a papule that enlarges to an ulcer. The ulcer can give the appearance of a volcano crater. Lesions may appear singly or multiple; many heal spontaneously within weeks to months to years.

Certain species (L. braziliensis) can disseminate to the mucosal areas of the face and mouth and cause very destructive and disfiguring disease (espundia) that appears similar to leprosy.

Kala-azar, an Indian name given to systemic type of the disease due to the grayish appearance of the body, can result in enlarged spleen and liver, diarrhea, emaciation, weakness and death.

Laboratory diagnosis I usually based on stained microscopic examination of the infected tissue. More specialized techniques like culture, molecular techniques and antibody detection are available but are not available in most diagnostic laboratories.

If you get leishmaniasis, your doctor should consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for treatment guidelines.

So you plan to travel to a part of the world where leishmaniasis is endemic, what can you do to prevent the horrible disease?

There is not a vaccine available to prevent leishmaniasis. The best way is to avoid sandfly bites. The CDC recommends the following:

Avoid outdoor activities, especially from dusk to dawn, when sand flies generally are the most active.

When outdoors (or in unprotected quarters):
• Minimize the amount of exposed skin. To the extent that is tolerable in the climate, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks; and tuck your shirt into your pants.
• Apply insect repellent to exposed (uncovered) skin and under the ends of sleeves and pant legs. Follow the instructions on the label of the repellent. The most effective repellents are those that contain the chemical DEET (N,N-diethylmetatoluamide).

When indoors:
• Stay in well-screened or air-conditioned areas.
• Keep in mind that sand flies are much smaller than mosquitoes and therefore can get through smaller holes.
• Spray living/sleeping areas with an insecticide to kill insects.
• If you are not sleeping in a well-screened or air-conditioned area, use a bed net and tuck it under your mattress. If possible, use a bed net that has been soaked in or sprayed with a pyrethroid-containing insecticide (permethrin or deltamethrin). The same treatment can be applied to screens, curtains, sheets, and clothing (clothing should be retreated after five washings).

Exploring Options For an Indigestion Cure

Indigestion is that bloated, acidic feeling that you get in your stomach. It usually is an indication of other problems associated with your gastrointestinal system. Occurring during or after eating, indigestion can cause several uncomfortable symptoms. An indigestion cure is sought out by many individuals, as it is a common complaint.

Other symptoms of indigestion are burning, gas, nausea, belching, pain, and even vomiting. The churning and growling noises associated with indigestion are often audible. Indigestion is not only uncomfortable, but causes embarrassment when others can hear it. An indigestion cure is sometimes as simple as a change in diet and as complicated as surgery to correct the underlying problem.

Many people experience heartburn associated with indigestion. This burning discomfort in the chest is often mistaken for chest pain. This occurs when the acids in your stomach rise up into your esophagus. Each year many people are affected by indigestion.

There are many disorders that can cause indigestion. Some of these problems are emotions and anxiety, certain medications, such as aspirin, GERD, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), thyroid problems, ulcers, alcohol use, infection, pancreatitis, gastroparesis, and even cancer. Ruling out any of the above is the first step in finding an indigestion cure.

An indigestion cure is often found in making some lifestyle changes. Some of these changes include decreasing your alcohol consumption, decreasing or quitting cigarette smoking, getting more sleep, lowering your stress level, losing weight, slowing down your eating at mealtimes, cutting out fatty foods, and eating less. Pregnancy is also a trigger for indigestion.

Your primary care physician can help you to find an indigestion cure. If you are experiencing indigestion make an appointment to rule out any more serious problems. If any serious disorders are ruled out you can then work on lifestyle changes although putting lifestyle changes into action immediately would also be a wise decision.

When you visit your doctor he or she will want to do a thorough physical examination to assess your general overall health. Your primary care physician may order other tests to be done, such as x-rays or laboratory tests. An endoscopy may be suggested. This is a procedure that uses a small scope to better examine your stomach.

If you have the symptoms of indigestion and want to investigate your own indigestion cure you there are some self-help remedies you can try in addition to the ones suggested above. When you are eating be sure to chew with a closed mouth, avoiding talking, and eating fast. Air is swallowed when you do those things and this can increase the likelihood of indigestion. You can also abstain from smoking cigarettes and alcohol consumption or at least cut back considerably. Avoiding spicy foods may also help.

A bland diet is encouraged. Exercising will also help by de-stressing yourself and encouraging weight loss if you are overweight. If you are overweight, weight loss is sometimes all that is needed providing you are exempt from underlying medical disorders. Do not eat after 7 p.m., as this will sit in your stomach and aggravate your indigestion. Finally, after eating a meal, relax for a bit allowing your stomach time to digest your food.

Indigestion is a very uncomfortable and sometimes painful feeling. See your doctor as soon as possible to rule out any more serious type illness. An indigestion cure will then be more easily obtainable once you have taken this important first step.
